Description
According to L'Epoque, a mysterious daguerreotype was recently found in an old apartment in the 8th Arrondissement of Paris. Only the following note was attached:
In the summer of 1840, I practiced as a physician in Rouen. I had barely set foot in the city before strange rumors reached me; whispers about the «Devil's Child» that lived in some godforsaken village not far from the city gates. Of course, any village in France – I'd dare say, in all of Europe – prides itself in having it's very own macabre local legend. The more macabre, the merrrier. Hence, I payed little attention to any such rumors. This is an age of science, after all. An age of reason.
Then, brought to that very village by a local priest, I was introduced to Erik.
Erik defied both science and reason.
How a child can survive and grow strong with such deformities, I still cannot begin to explain. Nor could I do anything to help him. The only thing I could do, was to observe.
Erik spoke little, but growled more. A simple-minded creature, I persumed then. One must bear in mind that modern science irrevocably confirms the connection between a person's outwards appearence and his character. Yet, as of late, I have begun to wonder if those inhumane growls and empty stares were not empty at all – but rather the only outlet for an unspeakable despair and contempt for humankind.
I digress.
At any regards, this is the only portrait I have of Erik. It is rather peculiar that I've kept it until now; I myself cannot explain it. Sometimes, I wonder what happened to the boy with those strange, yellow eyes. Other times – most of the time, to say the truth - I'm thankful I never found out.»
Ahem.
I have a fascination for Victorian photos and an overactive imagination. Something like this was bound to happen sooner or later.
Credit time!

"One must bear in mind that modern science irrevocably confirms the connection between one's outward appearance and one's character." So, so ignorant.
