A quick sketch of Nadir's wife Rookheya, from Susan Kay's book Phantom
She dies before the story even begins.
Which gets me thinking...
We all know that Erik is the number one tortured soul in the story, but Nadir's life hasn't excactly been a dance on roses either. First, he looses his beloved wife. Then, he looses his only son to a terrible illness. Through this, he risks his skin on a daily bases, trying to protect his slightly murderous and unhinged worst friend/best enemy. Then, he spends five years in a hell-hole of a jail (pardon my french) for saving the life of said frenemy. And when he finally gets out, what does he do? Yup - he crosses two continents, and continues to act as the living conscience of aformentioned frenemy, risking punjabing, being fried alive, and generally dying a thousand very unpleasant deaths.
And still he never looses his cool.
Right, back to the picture. I like drawing poofy hair. A lot.
